“Look! I am sending my messenger, and he will prepare the way before me. Then the Lord you are seeking will suddenly come to his Temple. The messenger of the covenant, whom you look for so eagerly, is surely coming,” says the LORD of Heaven’s Armies.”
Malachi 3:1 NLT
For those who still do Christmas Cards, ‘thank you’. In the last few years I have not. Still, don’t you love getting them, especially the ones with pictures, letters, or messages that awaken an eagerness within either because they touch a spiritual cord or trip your tickle box?
Messengers that bring good news prepare our hearts to receive the gift. During Advent churches adorn their sanctuaries and grounds with ‘hanging of the greens’, nativities, while scriptures are read and candles lighted. Pastors bring homilies, sermons that point to the birth of Christ.
Messengers that announce His coming allow us opportunities to prepare beyond dragging in the decorations from the garage and adorning our homes, beyond finding the perfect gift or any gift, wrapping it and setting it under the tree.
The Lord we are seeking is surely coming to His temple…the spiritual heart of the believer. In fact, He is already in residence.
We, however, need reminders, messengers, seasons designated by the church for centering on specific events in scripture. Times to examine ourselves, root out sin that separates us from intimacy with Christ.
Messengers that announce His coming remind us that God became man…a baby..a helpless infant..entrusted to human beings…like He entrusts the gospel message to His Body, The Church in all its various manifestations in this world.
Emmanuel, God with us…lives in within each and every believer.
